At the Intelligence and National Security Summit hosted by AFCEA International, and the Intelligence and National Security Alliance, David Gauthier, director of the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency’s Commercial and Business Operations Group said that the government has some obligation to think about commercial protection due to private sector satellites becoming a part of the hybrid public-private space architecture.
In my opinion this would lead to an increased private interest in the space industry. With the recent Russian invasion of Ukraine, and the subsequent attack on Viasat, this move would give confidence to the private players about their interests and assets being safeguarded. This might potentially also increase private investment in the space industry as their interests are more insured.
With increased entanglement of private space industry in critical aspects of our civilisation, this move is a step in the right direction. Additionally, steps to not just compensate companies for their losses, but also to help them defend against attacks are something the state should next look at.
