Last week a Russian telecom satellite owned and operated by Dozor-Teleport was hacked by hackers claiming to be affiliated with PMC Wagner, a private military corporation in an attack connected with the ongoing war in Ukraine. This attack similar in nature to the earlier Russian attack on via sat demonstrated the dangers of relying on satellite communications and satellite internet services. While the attack was intended to cause interference to a specific user group millions across Europe lost service. With an increased number of attacks due to the ongoing war, it really goes to illustrate the need for good cyber security practices for critical infrastructure elements. As we expand the amount of networks and constellations that reside in the space domain it is important they they have good defenses built in and that the folks on the ground operating the networks also practice good cyber hygiene.
