THALES SEIZES CONTROL OF ESA DEMONSTRATION SATELLITE IN FIRST CYBERSECURITY EXERCISE OF ITS KIND

For this weeks article, I came across a first of a kind cybersecurity exercise. European Space Agency (ESA) set up a satellite test bench to simulate attempts to seize control of OPS-SAT, a nanosatellite operated by the agency for demonstration purposes. ESA challenged the cybersecurity community to disrupt operations, a real-life red team event against a satellite. From taking control of the system used to manage the payload’s global positioning system, attitude control system, and onboard camera to compromising mission data, this demonstration showed potential impact of a real cyberattack and the consequences for both civilian and military systems. A lot of the concepts that the article mentions fits in directly with the discussion that we had in class on Red Team Lecture by Dr. Jacob Oakley. I highly recommend this read to understand the types of test platforms and exercises that are being explored to help learn more about cyber vulnerabilities of these space based systems.
