Turkey launched their first communications satellite – Turksat 6A – on SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket from their Florida facility. Like most other nation’s communication satellites, this communications satellite lives in geosynchronous orbit. The swath of Turksat 6A is set to cover Turkey, Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and Asia.
Turksat 6A is owned and operated by Turkey’s civilian space authority but this communication satellite is equipped with the Ku and X bands military communications payload and links.
Although this was a huge leap forward for Turkey, I am curious about the cybersecurity implementations of segmenting civil and military data use/storage. How does the Turkish civilian space authority that manages Turksat 6A, manage the complexity of the intended military applications? Was security viewed and considered differently (more strict?) due to the dual use?
