Companies are proceeding carefully in applying AI to satellite manufacturing. As an example, Blue Canyon Technologies wants a better understanding of how AI can contribute to manufacturing without jeopardizing cybersecurity.
“When you’re trying to teach an AI machine, where does your data go,” Chris Winslett, Blue Canyon Technologies general manager, asked at the Satellite Innovation conference here. “There’s also a concern about pulling in data from external applications. Where do they come from?”
According to a Kongsberg NanoAvionics engineer C. Senvaitis “I would hardly see this being integrated directly into manufacturing or testing,”.
Although AI can be useful for collecting and managing large data sets there are areas of concern over the trustworthiness of data sources AI models may use in satellite manufacturing.
Data pulled from various external sources could increase the security risks however if the data is generated internally by a company by sensors and stored on a secure cloud security risks could be mitigated.
