Globalstar & Apple – partnership with risks

Globalstar’s stock soared by 30% in one day when Apple announced a $1.5 billion investment in a next-generation constellation for supporting iPhones. This partnership expands upon Apple’s previous contract with Globalstart to provide connectivity with its satellite LEO L-band constellation. However, the investment is to develop a new generation of satellites, which is speculated to be built by Canada’s MDA and launched by SpaceX. This investment is believed to position Apple better in competing with similar contracts for Android phones with Space-X and AST SpaceMobile.

However, with the increased connectivity to space systems comes increased cybersecurity risks. Apple and Android phones have known vulnerabilities and tools to gain access to them; one of the most well-known would be Pegasus spyware for iPhone. A breach of Globalstar’s systems could enable an adversary to implant a malicious capability at scale against iPhone operating systems. Additionally, the connectivity streams are two-way methods; this could enable attackers to either bounce command signals, similar to Turla Group or conduct future Space-Cyber-enabled attacks. The security measures to counter risks to mobile users from satellite systems will need to be developed and/or matured to ensure the security and health of the eco-system.
